Plate with grisaille decoration (Diameter : 22,9cm).
Qianlong period, circa 1740.
The scene represents Table bay in South Africa. In the background one can see Table mountain with its flat top which gave its name to the place. In the foreground three Dutch ships anchored are ready to sail either for Asia or Europe. Cape of Good Hope was part of the Dutch colonies in the 18th century; the VOC had made it into a supply point for their ships between Asia and Europe.
This scene is also represented in polychromy; representaitons in grisaille, however, seem to be slightly rarer.
